Chapter 9

PC’s knees almost buckled out from under her. “Daisy has cancer?”

“We’re going to keep her at least overnight until she’s stable. I’m going to give her a referral to an oncologist, who can probably stop by tomorrow morning after the MRI and her labs come back.”

The detective felt like someone had hit her in the stomach with a baseball bat. The only thing she could do was nod.

Dr. Ryzk squeezed her arm. “We’re going to do everything we can for her. Someone will come move her upstairs in a few minutes.”

He left, and the nurse adjusted Daisy’s drips before she also retreated from the room.

PC moved to one side of her sister’s bed while Tyson loomed on the other. The detective reached to take her hand, but reconsidered, given that an IV was stuck in the back of it. She stroked her sister’s hair instead.

“How are you feeling, Dais?”

“Like I been hit by a truck.” Her voice was soft and raspy.

Tyson took his mother’s unpunctured hand into his big paw.

She smiled at him. “It’s gonna be okay, Ty. Promise.”

PC blinked back a tear. Don’t make promises you can’t keep .

“I called Zach. He’ll be here in the mornin’.” Tyson squeezed Daisy’s hand.

She nodded and her eyes closed. A glance at the machine beside her bed showed a rapid but steady heartbeat.

PC had to swallow her emotions before she could speak. “Tyson?”

Her nephew looked up.

“I’ve got to at least tell your grandmother and uncle what’s going on. I can call them to come, or I can go pick them up. Will you be okay staying here by yourself if I did that?”

He nodded. “I need somebody to feed my lamb in the morning.”

“Do you have an ag friend who can take care of it for you?”

He swallowed hard and got out his phone. “Yeah. I guess… I guess I could ask Damon Harrington. His is next to mine at the fair.”

“Why don’t you go ahead and call him?”

He nodded and made the call.

PC picked up her own phone, then put it away. Calling would be a lot faster. But Rocky and Rose deserved to hear about Daisy in person. She almost felt like she was making a death notification.

Now, it was just after midnight. PC could be back at Rose’s by one.

She should call.

She knew she should call.

Rose would be furious with PC for keeping Daisy’s illness from her. But what good would it do for Rocky and her mother to be up half the night, sick with worry, when that wouldn’t help Daisy one iota?

A nurse came to move Daisy into a room and Tyson finished his call. They followed her through the maze of corridors, PC holding a plastic bag with Daisy’s bloody clothes.

In the room, the nurse got all the machines connected and the bags of fluid hung. She patted a groggy Daisy on the shoulder, saying, “You just rest, Mrs. Engleman. I’ll be back in a few minutes to check on you. Your sister and your handsome son are here with you, okay?”

Daisy nodded, yawned, and closed her eyes.
